First there was cute cushion blushers, then alphabetised bb, cc and dd creams (the list goes on) came along, and now we're obsessed with glass skin, snail slime and everything in between. It's official - our beauty routines have had a K-Beauty revolution.
But what is K-Beauty?
Refreshingly, this isn't yet another Kardashian franchise situation. Essentially a name to categorise the Korean influence upon our own skincare routines and the epic product imports from the country itself, K-Beauty is the secret to looking youthful AF.
Why has Korea spurred such a worldwide beauty phenomenon?
Because their beauty aesthetic is so different to ours - so focused on health, hydration and a preferred lack of pigment - as opposed to our sun-ravaged aspirations. Pristine, perfected and pale skin is a measure of beauty so the products that come out of Asia have high specific standards to enable those things, and our skin can only benefit.
It's all about nourishing your skin so it looks amazing without make-up, rather than the more British approach of investing in products to cover it all up.
Your K-Beauty Skincare Masterclass
1. Eye make-up remover
Why? Your eye area is super delicate which means an ordinary cleanser cannot be expected to step up to the mark without dragging the skin around.
2. Gentle Cleanser
Why? Clean = pristine. And do it twice to be extra sure. First with an oil based cleanser to dissolve make-up and dirt, and then a foam one to get squeaky clean skin. Pollution be gone.
Why? Less is more for the Korean woman. Twice a month is fine to reveal the glowy fresher skin underneath all the dead cells on top. Stick to the T-zone only.
Why? To remove any left over cleansing residue of course. And to allow skin to absorb the next step better since it'll be slightly dehydrated by now.
5. Treatment Essence
Why? A slight mystery this one, but it's an essential K-Beauty product. For cell turnover (much like the exfoliator but more gentle and daily), and to prep skin to best receive the next products you apply to your face.
Why? A serum contains super concentrated active ingredients to deliver all the hydrating and line smoothing power deeper into your skin. Think of this as the step that's actually going to change the way your skin looks and feels.
7. Sheet Mask
Why? Like suffocating your skin, but with really, really good stuff. Soaked in beneficial ingredients (collagen usually factors) that are forced into your skin since there is no. way. out.
8. Eye Cream
Why? See step 1, your eyes need special care and attention stat.
9. Sleep Pack/Moisturiser
Why? You've come so far, may as well finish the job with a seriously hydrating or detoxing overnight pack (that's a face mask you don't wash off to you and me) or day cream. Only this time it'll be supercharged by the eight other products you've already put on your face.
Why? Because you do not want a tan. I repeat, you do not want a tan. Or sun damage and all the icky side effects that come with it, obviously. The aim of the game is super youthful skin people so SPF is a must.
